The mind is much of medicine

Mental health issues consume nearly a third of primary care, and psychological expertise is crucial in nearly all patient encounters to optimize adherence and outcomes. On this cruise we’ll be exploring the PsychUpdate Jalapeño Collection—thirty clinically useful papers from across the key areas in mental health, at a brisk pace. This sailing also features the Eclipse of the Century—the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse viewed from the western Mediterranean. Your instructor is Greg Dubord, MD, CBT Canada’s CME Director and a University of Toronto CME Teacher of the Year.

Port details 

Day 1. Barcelona, Spain For those returning or joining fresh, Barcelona offers endless discoveries beyond the famous sights. Venture to Montserrat monastery, perched dramatically in saw-toothed mountains an hour from the city. Explore the Picasso Museum in the Born district, tracing the artist's early years through his Blue Period. Visit the Palace of Catalan Music, a modernist concert hall where stained glass creates rainbow light. Discover Bunkers del Carmel, a local secret offering 360-degree views without tourist crowds. Browse the Encants flea market for vintage treasures and architectural salvage under a mirrored canopy. Take a cooking class to master paella and learn the secrets of sofrito and alioli. Cycle along the beachfront to Badalona, stopping for vermut and olives at a chiringuito. Explore Gràcia neighborhood's village feel, with intimate plazas and independent shops. End your embarkation at El Nacional, a restored art nouveau space housing four restaurants and four bars under one stunning roof.

Day 2. Palma de Mallorca, Spain Palma combines Gothic grandeur with Mediterranean island charm on Mallorca's sun-drenched coast. Begin at the Cathedral of Santa Maria (La Seu), featuring both Gothic splendor and Gaudí's modernist touches. Explore the Arab Baths, a rare remnant of Moorish rule with horseshoe arches and a peaceful garden. Wander the old town's narrow streets, discovering hidden courtyards and baroque churches behind ancient doors. Visit Bellver Castle, a rare circular fortress offering 360-degree views of the bay and mountains. Sample ensaïmada, Mallorca's spiral pastry, at Ca'n Joan de S'Aigo, the island's oldest café. Browse the Olivar Market for sobrassada sausage, local olives, and Mallorcan pearls. Take the vintage wooden train to Sóller through orange and lemon groves (if time permits). Stroll the Passeig del Born for designer shopping under plane trees. End at the marina, watching mega-yachts while sipping hierbas, the local herbal liqueur.

Day 3. At sea (CME Day with Solar Eclipse). 
At around 10:00AM, Celebrity Xcel will sail into the path of totality for the century’s longest eclipse. For nearly five mystical minutes, daylight will vanish, and stars will emerge in the dark Mediterranean sky.

Day 4. Tangier, Morocco Tangier offers an intoxicating blend of African, European, and Arabic influences at the crossroads of continents. Enter the medina through Bab Haha gate, where the modern world gives way to ancient alleyways. Explore the Kasbah Museum in the former Sultan's palace, showcasing Moroccan artifacts and offering terrace views. Wander the Grand Socco, where Berber women in traditional dress sell fresh mint and mountain herbs. Browse the souks for leather goods, brass lanterns, and colorful babouche slippers. Sample traditional mint tea and almond-filled pastries at Café Hafa, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. See where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic at Cap Spartel lighthouse. Visit the Caves of Hercules, where the opening resembles the map of Africa. End with a tagine dinner, savoring preserved lemons and olives while musicians play traditional Gnawa music.

Day 5. Seville (Cadiz), Spain Cadiz, Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city, serves as your gateway to Andalusian treasures. In Cadiz itself, climb Torre Tavira for camera obscura views of the white-washed old town. Explore the Cathedral with its golden dome and Zurbarán paintings. Walk the seafront promenades between La Caleta and Victoria beaches, where locals practice flamenco on the sand. If you're venturing to Seville, visit the massive Gothic cathedral housing Columbus's tomb and the Giralda tower. Explore the Alcázar palace, where Moorish architecture creates geometric gardens and stunning tilework. Stroll through Santa Cruz quarter's orange-tree-lined streets and hidden plazas perfect for tapas. Watch or join impromptu flamenco in Triana district across the Guadalquivir River. Sample fino sherry in a traditional tabanco, paired with jamón and aged cheeses. Return to port with memories of Andalusian passion and pride.

Day 6. Malaga, Spain Malaga blends beach resort ease with surprising cultural depth, birthplace of Picasso and gateway to Andalusia. Start at the Alcazaba fortress, where Moorish palaces cascade down the hillside with gardens and fountains. Visit the Roman Theatre below, discovered accidentally in 1951 and now hosting summer performances. Explore the Picasso Museum in a restored Renaissance palace, featuring works donated by the artist's family. Climb to Gibralfaro Castle for sweeping views of the coast and bullring below. Stroll Calle Larios, the elegant pedestrian shopping street leading to the old town. Sample espetos, sardines grilled on bamboo skewers over beach fires, a Malaga specialty. Visit the Centre Pompidou Málaga, a colorful cube showcasing contemporary art. Browse Atarazanas Market in a former Moorish shipyard, its stained-glass window depicting historic scenes. End at El Pimpi bodega, where sherry barrels are signed by celebrities, enjoying sweet Malaga wine.

Day 7. Ibiza, Spain Ibiza reveals its dual personality: UNESCO World Heritage site and Mediterranean party paradise. Explore Dalt Vila, the fortified old town perched above the harbor, with Renaissance walls enclosing cobbled streets. Visit the Cathedral at the summit for panoramic views of Formentera and the Mediterranean. Discover the Necropolis of Puig des Molins, showcasing Phoenician and Carthaginian tombs and artifacts. Browse the hippy markets of Las Dalias for bohemian crafts, vintage clothing, and handmade jewelry. Sample bullit de peix, traditional fish stew, at a waterfront restaurant in the marina. Explore Sa Penya neighborhood's whitewashed houses cascading down to the port. Visit MACE contemporary art museum in a historic powder magazine within the walls. For beach time, Talamanca offers calm waters just minutes from town. Watch the sunset from Café del Mar or a quieter spot, as the sky turns psychedelic over the Mediterranean.

Day 8. Barcelona, Spain For your final morning, discover Barcelona's local neighborhoods before disembarkation. Visit Sant Antoni market, recently restored to modernist glory, for breakfast among locals. Explore Poble Sec, where traditional bodegas serve vermouth on tap and theaters line Parallel Avenue. Take the funicular to Montjuïc Castle for morning light over the city and Mediterranean. Browse Raval's vintage shops and MACBA contemporary art museum if time permits. Grab last-minute gifts at Escribà, the modernist pastry shop with edible art. Say farewell with a café cortado at a sidewalk table, watching Barcelona wake up one last time.

Celebrity Xcel is the newest and largest ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet—launched in November 2025, she’ll be just twenty months old when we sail. The triple-deck Grand Plaza anchors the interior, with the legendary Martini Bar and live music every evening.
