Orthodox CBT

Canada's most comprehensive continuing education training in orthodox (i.e., conventional) CBT is sponsored by the University of Toronto's Department of Psychiatry and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The University of Toronto offers a CBT Certificate Program, directed by Drs. Greg Dubord and Sagar Parikh.

Certification requires the successful completion of three courses, and passing grades on a written examination and a psychotherapy tape evaluation.

Note:  These courses are designed for full-time psychotherapists. Family physicians are advised to enroll in medical CBT courses, which are designed around their practice realities.

Level Three: Advanced Cognitive Therapy Course

Founded by Greg Dubord, MD in 1999, and repeatedly updated ever since, the ACTC provides practitioners with advanced skills training in orthodox cognitive therapy.

ACTC topics include treatment resistance, working with meta-cognition, transference issues, emotion-focused interventions, and Eastern psychology integration (e.g., mindfulness practice).

Research on the real-world effectiveness of the ACTC was published in the October 2004 issue of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry (Vol 49, No 10). Reassuringly, ACTC participants do indeed become better therapists, according to independent standardized measures. But more importantly, the patients of ACTC trainees get better faster.

The next ACTC commences on April 14, 2012.
